McLaren No 1181
No: 1181. Reg; BF 4595. “King Harry”. Built 1912. 8nhp. 20 tons. Compound Road Locomotive. Built at the McLaren Workshop in Leeds in 1912 this engine was then shipped abroad and has spent its working life in Australia. Unfortunately to date we do not have any history of this engine but will research and hopefully be able to trace it. In 2003 the engine returned from Australia in a casement of parts. Purchased by the present owners in March 2005 who did not take ownership until February 2007. During this time it was put back together. The present owners have completely overhauled this engine by the renewing of gears, shafts, bearings, piston rods, valve gear, pins cleaning and making good many original parts and completely painting the engine and fitting tyres. Owned by: Stephen and Debbie Sanders, Truro.
McLaren No 1534
No: 1534. Reg: BS 9066. Built 1917. 5nhp. 9 tons. Compound General Purpose Engine with three gears, double drive, winding drum and front tank. This engine is one of a batch ordered by the Department of Agriculture for food production towards the end of the First World War. It would seem likely from a date in the first log book that on the 4th January 1918 it was delivered to Mr. John Roberts of Gallow Hill, Newtownmountkennedy in County Wicklow, Ireland for threshing duties. The engine remained on that farm until 1971 or 1972 when it was purchased by Group Captain C. H. Tighe, O.B.E., D.F.C. of nearby Ballina Park, Ashford, County Wicklow, for preservation. Captain Tighe took the engine to events in more or less original condition, selling it on to Dennis O’Mahony of Enniskeane, County Cork in June of 1974 who attended events with it in the following year. Dennis fitted rubber to the front wheels early in his ownership but concentrated on his other engines starting a rebuild of 1534 in 1995. As a result of a conversation with a mutual friend at Dorset in 2002 the engine was acquired by John Wakeham of Launceston and arrived on the 10th October. A decision was taken to extend the rebuild started by Dennis to a full boiler and firebox restoration and at the same time fit an oversize axle and new bearing surfaces to the axle, winding drum and wheels. Other work has included bearings and a skim to the third shaft, new front wheel bearings and steering chains and motion work refurbishment, chimney base. Owned by: John Wakeham, Tredivett, Launceston.
