Built as a 3 ton tractor and supplied to Lord Ancaster, Stamford, Lincs on July 8th 1904. The engine was not accepted and returned to the makers. It was registered D1656 and finally sold on 30th of November 1904 to F. Quinnell & Sons of Sevenoaks, Kent. Sold by them in 1915 to a firm in Green Street Green, Henry Lewis & Sons (engine dealers) are recorded as owning the engine, sometime between 1920 & 1923. T.T. Boughton & Sons converted the engine to a Roller, along with another XA3 in 1923 and it was registered as PP 581 on the 4th of July. The next two owners were J.A. Harris, Chipping Sodbury, Gloucester and then J.P. Vines, Hardwick, Gloucester. It was bought in 1955 by Charles Gregory of Coombe, Nr. Camborne, as a Birthday present for his daughter, Phylis.

Bought from Mrs. Pettitt in August 1998 by the Stock family of Falmouth, Cornwall. Work carried out in this ownership includes; re-built differential, main drive & 2nd pinion gears, re-ground Crankshaft, new second and axle shafts. A new brake shaft and castings, new piston & rings, motion refurbished, new valve and the pump has been overhauled. Vulcanised rubber tyres, new tender and side tanks, with pipework to suite, new smokebox, front ring and door, steering castings and front axle. New bearings to suite shafts and gears. Driving pin holes bored and bushed, water lift hose and rose. In 2003, at Dorset, it was re-united with the Pantechnicon trailer it used to pull in its first working role.

The engine was reverted back to a tractor in 2004, and is thought to be the oldest Aveling tractor surviving, and the only XA3. The pictures show Bo-peep with the Pantechnicon along with an unknown Yorkshire lorry with it’s own load. This was taken in Sevenoaks Between 1905 and 1915.

This single cylinder engine snuck into Cornwall under the cover of darkness in March of 2004. It was originally purchased by Hinckley Rural District Council in Leicestershire where she worked until 1926, then being sent to an engine dealer in Wood Lane, London. That year she was purchased by Syd Sutton a Contractor from Beckermet, Cumbria. Under Syd the engine worked in the West Lake District for 32 years, during this time she was sub-contracted out from 1940 to 1943 when the engine was used to help build two Royal Ordinance factories. The first was Drigg and the second ROF Sellafield. In 1958 she passed into the hands of H. F. Smith & Son of Hexham, Northumberland where she worked with a lighter Fowler Roller on general Road repairs. In 1968 she was sold to Billy Treloar (an engine dealer). That same year Barry Harrison of Burgh by Sands, Carlisle, Cumbria bought both the Fowler and "Pride of the Road'". They spent 28 years in a barn, the Fowler was completely covered whereas "Pride of the Road” was half in and half out of the barn. When Nigel Scurrah of Ripon took ownership in 1996 he put in new tubes, tube plate and chimney in 1997. Donald’s son, Jeffery Harding, brought the engine down to Cornwall in the year 2000, but due to work commitments he was unable to rally it. The present Owners purchased the roller in July 2008.
